Another early morning as we had pre-booked Alcatraz tour tickets. This was sold out when we showed up as well. I highly recommend this tour, and pre-booking your tickets. We did the early tour at 9:00. It's one of the first boats to leave so it isn't as busy as later in the day. We wanted the evening tour but that sold out a month prior when I booked.
From our hotel we could walk to Pier 41 to pick up the Alcatraz ferry. There was an over priced cafe beside the pier, so we picked up some breakfast and got in our line. The day started out overcast, but by mid-day the sun came out.
The Alcatraz tour starts at the ferry dock, and continues to the island. You can explore the grounds and then pick up the headset for the audiotour when you're ready for the prison tour. It is extremely well done.
You exit the tour through the gift shop where you can purchase replicas of each ornament on display and mentioned during the tour. There is also an Alcatraz gift shop at pier 39 with similar artifacts. Not as well made, and not as true to the original, but cheaper.
After the tour we headed out to Chinatown and found a great place on our way. It was this great Thai restaurant that charges $5 for every entree and appetizer and beers are $2. I think it was called King of Thai? It was on the corner of Grant and Vallejo. Found it on yelp. Delicious and so cheap. We walked around, then headed over to Polk and Broadway. There are a lot of high end consignment shops that are very pricey. Union street has a lot of high end shopping too. We weren't too impressed. We expected the shopping to be more like Queen street or the St Lawrence Market in Toronto, where it was more like Yorkville. We walked down Fillmore street for a bit too. Many pretentious shops. We met my cousin for coffee then headed north towards another restaurant we found on yelp. The food here did not let us down!
We wanted Italian, so we went to Pan E Vino on Union near Gough. Very good! Great wood oven pizzas and not overly expensive.
Our goal was to try and get down to Crissy Fields to get a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge. The weather here is crazy. It will be hot and sunny one minute, and then cloudy and windy the next, and when the fog rolls in there's no more picture taking!
After walking my cousin to her bus stop, we headed down to the park. It was too foggy but we had some fun at the marina.
