July 25 Santa Cruz - San Francisco

We had a leisurely morning, before packing up. We made bacon over the fire to put in our BLT's for lunch. Delicious. Pop tarts over the fire is quite tasty as well! After packing up we went back to the main office to pick up one of the many well marked trails to spend the morning hiking.

Little Shay, Big Redwood

After the hike, we drove back towards Santa Cruz to get back onto the coastal highway. We had heard a lot of talk about Mystery Spot and it was on our way. We thought about going until doing some internet investigation. Their website says it's a "geological phenomenon". Enticing right? Review websites say it is a hill that they built houses on sideways so you feel as though gravity is working against you. Not so enticing. We skipped it, and searched for the beach instead.

There were so many gorgeous beaches heading north. We pulled off at one that we couldn't resist. However, it was so windy, I had to take cover in some large driftwood. Shay risked all and ran helter skelter into the ocean. It was freezing. The air temperature changed. When we were in Big Basin it was like 28. Down at the coast it was 15. Not warm enough to swim in freezing water. This was the last time we went into the ocean sadly.

We jumped back into the Sentra and headed to San Francisco. We had another reservation at The Wharf Inn in the Fisherman's Wharf area. Another good thing as there was no vacancy here either. We paid $180 per night, and that included parking and wifi. For the location and free parking it was worth it. Most hotels in San Francisco don't include parking and can charge $30 for it! Fisherman's Wharf is a very touristy location. We unpacked the car, and found a place to eat. We chose Franciscan Crab Restaurant, on the Embarcadero. It got relatively good reviews on Yelp. It was ok. Very close to our hotel, and we had a view of the bay which was nice, since the sun was setting as we ate, but a little over priced for what it was. Had my first dungeness crab. Not bad. Smaller than snow, but they cook it in garlic.

We toured around the neighbourhood, before calling it a night.
