July 24 Monterey - Santa Cruz

We spent the day in Monterey. We went to the Aquarium and explored Cannery Row. Lots of fun shops and food.

We then made our way north to Santa Cruz. We had to go up to Big Basin Redwood National Forest, which is a little north of the coast in a town called Boulder Creek. This was another pre-booked site, and there was no vacancy when we showed up so we were very happy for the reservation. Our site was big and roomy and we saw our first mosquito!

You really can't beat camping amongst the redwoods!

After setting up camp and getting groceries, we made our way back down to Santa Cruz to explore the Beach Boardwalk. It was a lot of fun!

It's very old-school carnival, with games, and rides that are hammered together. The haunted house was cute, and the wooden rides rickety. We ate disgustingly, corn dogs and garlic cheese fries. All fantastic! Shay even won me a stuffed fox at one of the-knock-the milk-cans-down games. We just bought the 50 tickets for $45 or whatever the deal was and that was enough to get our fill. It was really cool to be on rides that over looked the ocean.

We were peckish on our way home and stopped at Saturn Cafe, what turned out to be a really tastey vegetarian diner. Good salads, sandwiches and soup. Yum! And open late! Driving back up to Big Basin in the dark was tricky, but we made it.
